A Memorial Day tribute to Jim
by Gopher inas we approach the american memorial day holiday, we can remember those who fought in past wars to help preserve a free, democratic society.. when i was a loyal "kingdom preacher" for jw's, i used to place magazines with a world war 2 veteran named jim.
jim stood tall and proud, with white hair and a white mustache.
when i met him, he was in his 70's and was starting to yield to the frailties of old age.. for some reason, he would take the watchtower and awake magazines from me twice a month over a period of about 5 years before i moved away.

If not God, who or what is ultimately in control?
by Guest with Questions ini believe that we are all subject to either god or man but man is very limited.
as a christian i believe that god is in control.
he did give us free choice to an extent but he is control overall.

We are bodies and our bodies are complex and variable tools used by genes to promote their own agenda.
We are part of the river of genes - only a tiny part floating through the universe of earthy life and genes are the rulers; they are in charege because they are what determine what shape your nose and your brain take - even often they determine how long a body may live - with only limited, but increasing influence from our short-lived body-brains.
Genes are in charge; we are only their tools. I hope that you are enjoying this life in your body, here and now, as much as possible.

is atheism better than believing in a god who doesnt care?
by theinfamousone inso here's a sincere question... and instead of pressing my frustrations and blaming god and bla bla bla... i decided that instead of writing letters to an inactive god, i would ask your opinion!!!!!.
here's the question, looking at the world around you, seeing all the pain and frustration, the death and disease, the war and hypocricy, the starvation and disgust; generally seeing that our world is falling apart... if someone were able to irrevocably prove that there was a god, an intelligent creator is you will, would you want to worship him?
if he was there and created all of this just to watch it all implode, would you be able to respect that?

Fortunately, I have been getting educated for a number of years on a number of topics related to the above questions, and I don't have to ask these things of god because I know that blind evolution and geological and atmospheric issues created most of these challenges to our existence - except for the health insurance problem. Although, I am sure if I search through the annals of evolutionary social psychology or sociology of medicine, I'll be able to find some interesting theories on the topic of lack of health care . . .

If there is a god who cares about us all, and even if it doesn't, I've got a whole bunch of questions for him, like:
Why create the suffering of predation in the animal kingdom?
Why not something less painful than having so many blood-thirtsy meat-eating carnivores? After all, the sentient beings being eaten all the time have nervous systems, unlike plants. Couldn't you have made us all vegetarians and eliminated all the pain and suffering of all the animals in the animal kingdom, since you're supposed to be a loving, compassionate, merciful being?
Why allow a poor caterpillar to be eaten from the inside out by the larvae of the digger wasp, implanted in its body after it is very carefully stung, so as to keep the catepillar meat fresh and alive (and probably in pain) for the newly hatching baby wasps? YUCK! Isn't that a bit sadomasochistic for a creator to do that to any sentient being - even a catepillar?
Why did you allow the skin on my upper arms to be so icky from some kind of allergy no one can figure out?
Why can't we all have health care and adequate health insurance coverage?
Why are we born right next to our mother's butt holes instead of in a more sanitary way?
Why did you allow the human infant's head to be so gigantic in comparison to a woman's vagina, through which it must come?
Why do you let earthquakes hurt and kill people?
And tidal waves?
And volcanoes?
Why do I have to breathe through the same hole I eat with? It is dangerous and inefficient.
Why did you create or allow nematocysts and mosquitoes?
Why are you playing all these games with us, you sado-masochistic bastard?

OK, so let's test the science advocates out here.............
by NotaNess ini'll start it off, then someone else give them a different challenge if you can think of any.. please give definitive examples that by evolution, a species has changed into something else.
give two separate findings by scientists, and it can't include any comments like "so we believe", "so we conclude that", or "the evidence shows that there could have been".....the wts has those copyrighted.. try and give un-doctored photographic proof, where possible, etc.
by the way the hominid skulls and the like will not be accepted, transition has never been proven, i don't think, just that they are different, and scientists "believe", they are pre-homo-sapiens.. i'm not saying you won't have examples, we just want you to walk the talk.

I'm so sorry that uncertainty terrifies you so. -Daystar
As science gets closer and closer to certainties regarding life's origins and of the origins of the cosmos, people become terrified that some concepts held dear become less and less certain, and it is often expressed in rageful, bullying, irrational, illogical demands.
That is why one scientist not so long ago had to drink hemlock, and why many modern religious people wish to inflict the same death on evolutionary biology and its proponents, at least in the court of popular opinion. It is unfortunate that so many are so dreadfully afflicted with the terror of losing their faith because the wonders of the universe really are no less wonderful by virtue of having evolved as opposed to having been created. In fact, it is perhaps even more stunningly amazing to comprehend.
I have found that it is also much easier to understand all of the inexplicable pain and suffering as the result of an indifferent, yet amazingly evolved universe, than it is to always question, why me, why this suffering, how could god let this happen, etc., and so forth. Much easier to understand everything from the standpoint of evolutionary biology and psychology than to wonder how god could create all the "cruelty" and suffering that indeed exists in the natural world and in human society, and there is quite a lot of it, as you well know.
It seems so much more comprehensible that there is no god playing games with creation, the way the bible shows god to be.

5go,
Even most reputable scientists acknowledge the existence of a creator.
I don't need a "picture" of something, to know it exists/existed.
Well, if you're referring to a few of those fog-brained Templeton Prize-Winners, then, yes, most of those "scientists" do believe in god.
They're also bought and paid for by the Templeton Foundation and by other right-wing "Christian" creationists, who are not scientists.
Creation "science" is in fact, pseudo-science and is held in very low regard by most scientists, particularly by well-trained biologists.
Those few good scientists who do believe in god make sure it does not get in the way of their research and do have the good sense not to bring creationism into their work, lest they be regarded as laughingstocks by their scientific peers.
As far as I know, there has only been one peer-reviewed paper/theory of creationism presented by scientists and it has been blown out of the water a number of times. Its author is totally discredited in the scientific community and is a laughingstock.
The majority of the most hightly respected and accomplished scientists are atheists, by the way.

My first and hopefully last vent on JWD
by nvrgnbk ini was talking to my trying-to-exit-the-cult fraternal twin brother yesterday about life, the jehovah's witness cult, and our jw parents.. he repeated, calmly and succintly, that he hates our parents.
i could not argue with him.
i used to, being a parent myself.

Madame Quixote
Sorry to hear that about your mom and the mean things she said about you. Maybe you could ask your brother not to repeat too much of what's said about you behind your back, if you think it might help.
It's good you have each other to talk to, though. When siblings are broken up because of abusive parents and an abusive religion, it makes it very hard on the one who manages to break free. I don't know it it is more difficult to remain trapped in that familiar pain as my sibs are, but I do know I could never go back to living in their kind of denial, always proclaiming, "how happy jehober's people are."
I too used to experience my share of physical abuse, but I witnessed a lot more of it being directed at my younger sister. The guilt and fear that goes with that experience is too much for a child. I am sorry to hear that your brother went through that, and that you did too. I guess it's good you don't remember . . .? Maybe that's also part of what keeps people locked in - they don't recognize or recall the abuse - telling themselves they deserved it, it coulda' been worse, they weren't so bad, after all, we had so many fun family vacations, food, shelter, clothes, etc.
Anyway, vent anytime you want; many of us have been through these lovely family experiences and many of us struggle alone with the issues; better to share and get it out and move on as much as possible!
